Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural & British Values

Our curriculum is ‘DIFFERENT, NOT DIFFERENTIATED…’ and we are aware that we need to adapt the learning, so our pupils can follow the areas of Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) and British Values (BV) to develop their ‘Cultural Capital’ in order to join in with events in our society.

The holistic nature of our curriculum enables enrichment and learning activities to take place to build these skills.  Our SMSC-BV framework is aimed at developing our pupils' abilities at their own cognitive level.

The framework can be broken down into the following areas:

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural

  • Spiritual Development
  • Moral Development
  • Social Development
  • Cultural Development

British Values

  • Democracy
  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
  • Mutual Respect
  • Individual Liberty
  • Rule of Law

SMSC sits at the heart of education. It enables children and young people to make appropriate choices as they encounter complex and changing circumstances in our modern society.

When addressed well, SMSC development has the potential to:

  • Raise aspirations
  • Develop empathy
  • Deepen spirituality
  • Connect young people with their communities
  • Create opportunities for pupils to learn and practise human virtues
  • Instil values such as compassion, hope, faith and forgiveness
  • Develop values that challenge individuals beyond the material world

To further promote SMSC-BV opportunities, the school has a programme of events based on religious and cultural events that are celebrated locally, nationally and globally.  These events enable pupils to have opportunities that some may not be able to experience outside of school due to their needs and the support they require.  These events can be found on our Celebration Days calendar.

The SMSC Quality Mark

'Young Citizens' is a citizenship education charity that informs, equips and inspires children and young people across the UK to be active citizens.

Through 'Young Citizens', we use a self-review tool and verification service to help audit and improve our SMSC provision. By assessing our existing SMSC delivery, using the SMSC Quality Mark, we have the opportunity to reflect on our current provision and use that to nurture and develop future plans.  We are currently applying for the accreditation ‘Quality Mark’ for our SMSC curriculum.

There are four levels of achievement:

  • Working towards
  • Bronze
  • Silver
  • Gold

We are proud to have obtained the Gold standard mark.
