Absence Procedure

Being in school every day is important for your child’s learning and progress, but we also understand that sometimes absences happen—whether due to illness or other unavoidable reasons.

Here is clear guidance on what to do if your child can’t come to school, how to let us know, and what information we’ll need.

If you have any questions or need a bit of extra support, please don’t hesitate to get in touch—we’re always happy to help.

Expected Absences

If you know your child will be absent, please let us know as early as possible. Here’s how:

1. Contact the school office
You can reach us by:
📧 office@wrenspinney.co.uk
📞 01536 481939

2. Include these details

  • Your child’s name and class
  • The date(s) of the absence
  • The reason for the absence

3. Give plenty of notice
The sooner we know, the better we can plan and support your child’s learning.

Unexpected Absences

If your child is unexpectedly absent (for example, due to illness), please follow these steps:

1. Call the school office before 9:00am
📞 01536 481939

2. Tell us:

  • Your child’s name and class
  • The reason for the absence
  • How long you expect them to be away (if known)

3. Keep us updated
Please call on each day of absence.

Term-Time Leave

Schools are not allowed to approve family holidays during term time. However, in exceptional circumstances, the headteacher may grant leave at their discretion.

If you need to request term-time leave:

1. Check if your reason is exceptional
Examples might include significant family events or unavoidable commitments.

2. Submit a request in writing with plenty of notice
Include:

  • Your child’s name and class
  • The dates you are requesting
  • The reason for the leave

3. Wait for the headteacher’s decision
Approval is not guaranteed and is entirely at the headteacher’s discretion.

Important: Unauthorised absences may lead to penalties, so please speak to us if you’re unsure.
